Welcome to the College of Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS) Writing Center! We are located on the first floor of the Hurst Library (back of the room, right-hand side). This page is where you can sign up for an appointment with the writing tutor, and find resources for writing questions. Click on the "Pages and Files" link on the right-hand side of this page to find writing resources.

The Writing Center's Mission: To help writers become more self-sufficient and confident by providing attention, tools, and time to facilitate the writing process.

Your Responsibility: While the writing tutor can help you improve your writing, you are ultimately responsible for the success of your papers. In order to have the most successful tutoring session possible, please take note of the following:

  • Bring a printed copy of the most current draft of your paper to your appointment.
  • Bring the instructions for the paper as given by your professor.
  • Write down a few questions or concerns to share with your tutor.
  • Come to the appointment ready to learn and work. NO phone calls or texts.
  • Make the tutor aware of your priorities – help the tutor focus on your biggest concerns.
  • The tutor will not “fix” your paper for you – she will help you learn to work on your writing.
  • Don’t assume that the paper will be perfect after one session. Good writing takes time.
  • Take notes and collaborate with the tutor.
  • BE ON TIME: If you are five minutes late, your session may be given to a waiting walk-in student.
  • You may NOT schedule more than one appointment per day. Appointments are for only 30 minutes.

Online Support
Can't make it to campus for an in-person appointment? The writing tutor is happy to work with you remotely. (Please note: online support will remain tutoring in nature, and will not operate as an editing or proofreading service.)

Online tutoring is available Monday - Thursday. To submit your paper, please email it as an attachment in a Microsoft Word document to onlinewritingcenter@northwestu.edu. Please allow for 48 business hours for your paper to be read and returned to you with the tutor's comments. Students may submit one paper at a time (e.g., do not submit two papers at once, or submit a second paper before your first has been returned). Each paper can be submitted a maximum of two times.

Your email must include the following information:
  1. Class the paper is for.
  2. Paper's due date.
  3. Any specific questions you would like to have addressed by the tutor.
  4. A brief explanation of the assignment you are fulfilling.

If your email is missing any of the above information, there may be a delay in reading your paper, as the tutor may need to ask for this information and wait for your reply.

Appointments
You can schedule an appointment using this wiki. Simply click "Edit" (top right hand corner) and write your name next to a time that works for you. Once you are finished, hit "Save." Please note, the tutor will stay for scheduled appointments and walk-ins until the last scheduled appointment for that day is finished, at which point she will no longer stay for walk-ins. If you plan to come, make an appointment. If you cannot make your appointment, please take your name off the schedule. No more than one appointment per person, per day.
